I had to fight for it.
March 30th, 2017.
I can still feel the weight of that graduation gown on my shoulders, the warmth of the stage lights, the cheers in the auditorium as I held my BSc Mining Engineering Degree from Wits University.
On the outside, it looked like triumph.
On the inside, it felt like a question mark.
Everyone expected me to be proud.
I expected me to be proud.
And yet, as the applause faded, a strange thought filled my mind:
“What if I’ve just worked this hard to get to the wrong finish line?”
The Silent Struggle Nobody Talks About
I told myself to ignore it.
I told myself it was just nerves.
But deep down, I knew: this wasn’t just a phase.
I wanted more than a title, more than a paycheck, more than ticking the box of being a “successful professional.”
I wanted to work with people.
I wanted to solve human problems.
I wanted my life’s work to mean something.
Instead, I was heading straight into a career that looked great on paper, but felt foreign and disconnected from who I really was.
So I did what any high achiever does - I tried to make it work:
• I interned at a Consulting Firm.
• I switched industries and entered corporate through a competitive Graduate Programme at one of Africa’s largest banks.
• I climbed the ladder - first as an Analyst, then as a Product Development Specialist - building solutions that served thousands of clients.
• I volunteered for other roles within the bank.
And yet, every step up the ladder just made me feel more out of place.
The Day I Realised the Ladder Was Leaning on the Wrong Wall
One day, I looked around at my colleagues - brilliant, capable, accomplished - and saw the same hollow look in their eyes that I saw in my own reflection.

At face value, we were all “living the dream.”
But secretly, we were all dying a little inside.

That’s when it hit me:
It wasn’t my boss.

It wasn’t the industry.
It was misalignment.

I stopped running from the discomfort and finally faced it.
Through prayer, research, and relentless introspection, I realized my frustration wasn’t a sign that something was wrong with me - it was an invitation.
